RAINBOW HIGH: Season 1 (Part 2)

So over a year ago...how time flies!...I did a post with commentary on the Rainbow High animated series. I always meant to keep up with it but I never did and here we are at the beginning of Season 3. Well, Shadow High has me so excited for the show that I'm going to finally catch up and finish writing commentary.

We left off right after ep 8 where Amaya is introduced and some of the Mainbow don't take it well.

Vi Life 8

Recaps Amaya finding out she got into RH. She recorded the entire conversation with Ms. Wright and plays it for Violet. Says she hopes to make friends. Poor Amaya.

Episode 9: Amaya's Discovery

The Mainbow are preparing for their day and run around swapping clothes and accessories with each other. Amaya is left out. In class, Amaya says she has a lot of ideas but doesn't want to step on Skyler's toes. Jade has a bitchy comment but Skyler blows her off and talks to Amaya. Points for Skyler, minus points for Jade. Grr. A bit farther away, Violet is watching and is pleased at the drama. Ruby tells her it's not all about her channel. Major points for Ruby. Violet and Sunny have a moment of celebrating Vi hitting 600K subscribers. Back at the other table, Amaya suggests an edit for Skyler's pink dress but Jade interrupts again, saying Bella loved that one and wanted to model it herself. SHE'S FUCKING EXPELLED, JADE. GET OVER IT.

Later, Amaya is walking down the hall with Sunny and she says every time she feels like she's part of the group, she gets shut out. Sunny insists she's part of the group but everyone is sad about Bella, especially Jade and Ruby. They pass the salon and there's a mystery machine inside. After checking it out, Amaya says she thinks it's a color change chamber. (Pretty sure that was some sort of cancelled playset.) She tells Sunny to bring the others there in 2 hours while she figures it out. Uh...don't you have class, Amaya? Guess not. So the Mainbow is all there and Amaya says she wants to really be part of the team. She tells the girls to put some clothes on and then Vi is standing in the chamber. Her skirt turns violet. Basically, Amaya just sticks each girl in the chamber and whatever white piece of clothing she handed the girl turns into her signature color. No big deal. Somehow though this works on the girls and Jade apologizes. There you go, Jade. Now never be a dick again.

Vi Life 9

Sunny recaps the clothes swapping while Violet tries to get her to talk about Amaya drama. Sunny says there is none, but says Colin got hit in the head with a football. Heh. Stupid Colin.

Episode 10: Bring On Rainbow Cheer

Ms. Wright calls Team Mainbow to the auditorium to give them a random challenge: design new uniforms for the cheerleaders.

It's been a long time since this aired and I still do not understand why an arts school has sports.

Their judges are from the cheerleading squad (Karma, Stella) and football team (River). I think this was the first appearance for Karma, though we have seen Stella before. Maybe River? I can't remember if he was at the party in the earlier eps. Amaya asks about River. Karma says they need to do a cheer in their designs.

JADE: I'm thinking high ponys and big bows. (everyone stares at her) What? I like pep.

Heh.

So everyone splits up into individual or paired assignments. Skyler and Amaya are on the same page but everyone else is kinda nuts. Skyler does a hilarious bird call to get their attention. Then they all brainstorm and decide to do a different look for each cheerleader...though they make different looks for each one of the Mainbow so...not sure how this applies to the actual cheerleaders.

They do their little commercial for the cheer dolls. I mean, performance for the judges. Ms. Wright is very impressed. Oh, and Amaya has her bright rainbow hair now. We won't see the white again for a while. River congratulates her and compliments her hair.

Vi Life 10

It's an interview with British royal Stella Monroe. Yay. I have a soft spot for Stella because my friend does her voice. And because she's awesome. Vi asks how Stella got onto the cheer squad as a first year and she says "No comment." Cute. Stella's focus is cosmetology and "it's my life's pursuit to make everyone look like royalty." Vi asks Stella to put in a good word for her with Karma, who's an influencer with over 2 million followers. Violet is dying to do a collab with her. They were totally setting them up to be rivals but literally nothing ever comes of that.

Episode 11: Going Viral

Poppy and Jade are hanging out and a crying Bella calls Jade. She tells them to watch the latest Vi Life. Turns out it's about Bella getting expelled and Bella is upset. Jade says she's got her back. The Mainbow discusses using personal lives in their art. Ruby and Jade are upset with Violet, but Poppy and Sunny seem to support her. Skyler mediates and Amaya sees both sides. Sunny and Violet do a dance because she just hit one million views. That really is totally assholish of them. Sunny there's a time to support your friend but this is not it. She's normally so much more understanding than that. Ruby and Jade huff off, then work on a plot. On Thursday nights, Violet puts on a bubble face mask and while it dries, they do the...wait for it...Buddy Bubble Boogie. You can imagine what Jade and Ruby's plan was. Film Violet and watch her go viral doing something embarrassing so she learns her damn lesson. A much-needed lesson. Violet says she'll take down the video and call Bella to apologize. She's so crushed that Amaya feels bad for her and you can see Jade and Ruby caving, too. UGH. NO. It was tough love but it needed to be done. So the Mainbow all put on the stupid masks and do the dance, saying if they all do it, it's not a joke, it's a thing. Violet happily joins in and their new video gets lots of likes, including some from Bella.

Vi Life 11

Violet talks about how what she did to Bella was wrong and how they talked and they're "on the mend." Then she posts an extra long version of the Buddy Bubble Boogie because she wants to be her true authentic self in her videos.

Episode 12: A Dorm with a View

It's care package day and Violet, Skyler, Sunny and Poppy get stuff from home. Poppy's is a poster of her favorite beach spot and it makes her homesick. Sunny got a blanket, Skyler's mom sent beach/outdoor chairs for studying outside, Violet's mom sent cookies for Sunny and an instant camera for Violet. Jade's dad sent each girl sunglasses and Ruby got giant decals.

In class, Ms. Wright has them practicing runway walks. None of them are good at it but Poppy's homesickness is especially bad. Amaya has an idea and they transform the one common room into a little beachish getaway for Poppy. She didn;t realize they were all homesick so she feels better about it, though she also realizes there's nowhere she'd rather be than RH.

Vi Life 12

Q&A. Nothing much here. Bella is back in regular school and has been doing community service. Amaya likes River. Skyler has not spoken to Colin since the party. Stella says Sheryl Meyer is her roommate.

Episode 13: Shining Star

Ms. Morton and Ms. Wright interrupt the Mainbow to tell them Krystal Bailey was so impressed with their cheerleading outfits that she wants to interview them for The Scene. Amaya asks what that is. The Scene is the school magazine and Krystal is the editor. Krystal says she's going to interview all of them to see which one will be featured. A bit rude. Just do the group. Violet goes first and films the experience for the Vi Life because of course she does. Krystal is asking everyone why they deserve to be featured so they each explain their passion. Then the next day, they discuss/argue about it in class. Ms. Wright sends them to their advisor, Ms. Morton. Ms. Morton tells them to take a fabric swatch that reminds them of another team member and say why that person is vital to the team. So they all bond and everything is okay, which is good because Ruby gets a text from Krystal with herself on the cover of the magazine. This ep made me not like Krystal. If she liked the cheerleading outfits, they were designed by them all. Interview them all. Don't be polarizing.

Vi Life 13

Krystal talks about how she got into journalism.

Episode 14: All About Aidan

We still do not have an Aidan doll but he gets an episode. Blah blah. Football. Who cares? New character alert: Emerald McNabb, quarterback. Emerald has sprained his ankle so Aidan is stepping in as quarterback and he's scared. He's under a lot of pressure. Poor guy. He is pretty likeable, even if I hate this sports at an art school thing. The Mainbow visit Avery in her studio and Ruby tells Avery and Ainsley about Aidan being worried. They know. That's why they tried to pep up the crowd earlier but it didn't work. Ruby organizes a giant commercial for the cheer dolls. I mean, pep rally. And they won. Good.

Kontent With Karma 1

A welcome break from Vi Life. I really prefer Karma's episodes, though she's a bit confusing. She describes herself as "your fave baddie" but ends every episode with "It's not only about looking good, it's about doing good." So she isn't bad. Not even a little. I still think they meant to make her more of a rival for Violet and just dropped the idea. This one is about her top 5 looks from the game. Not fascinating but I do love Karma.

Episode 15: Amaya's Time

After witnessing some crush eyes in the hall, the Mainbow push Amaya to ask River out. She is an absolute master at being awkward. Amaya is kinda polarizing for me. Sometimes I really like her, like when she tried so hard to contribute to the group and when she comes up with good team ideas, but other times, she's written very awkward on purpose and she's forced into a lot of storylines she doesn't really need to be in. (The play? Ugh.) So she's a little bit Mary Sueish. That said, her strangled cry when running away after the failed dance video was hilarious. Anyway, all her failed attempts were pointless because he'd been working up the courage to ask her out. All's well that ends well.

Vi Life 14

Talking to River. He's cute. Not the most fascinating characters but he seems like an actual nice guy. And there's a nod to Kia Hart, who suggested he and Amaya would be compatible. First Kia mention.

Episode 16: The Runway Run-Through Wreck

It's the day of the runway show and Amaya says "good luck" before rehearsal. Everyone freaks because that apparently tempts the fashion fates to make things go wrong. Sigh. Awkward Amaya again. Avery and Ainsley have the Mainbow perform a ridiculous stunt to remove the bad luck. Amaya accidentally says is AGAIN. SIGH. Everything possible goes wrong. The accidentally-played video of Amaya imitating Ms. Wright was hilarious. That's the kind of awkward I like from her.

Vi Life 15

Superstitions and stories about the fashion fates.

Episode 17: Fashion Fates Fiasco

Amaya and River have amusing bad luck near-misses with the rack of garment bags. Cute Kia cameo.

KRYSTAL: Shouldn't you just roll them on the rack?

AMAYA: Racks are the enemy!

Heh. This makes me like her a lot actually.

Jade, stop referencing Bella. Sheesh.

So this is the moment from the first episode where they're all panicking but then Amaya gets there and they waste time panicking THEN because she didn't fix the outfits. But they were in garment bags when they fell so how damaged can they be? Ugh. Stupid.

Amaya helps Jade, who says their group is really lucky to have her. Then stop going back on that, Jade.

Seriously though, as if Amaya could dye her hair white in 2 minutes. Double sigh.

Kontent With Karma 2

Fails and faves from the previous ep. Nothing major.

Episode 18: The Final Runway Show

First look at the De'Vious twins in the audience. These two go on to be the worst-designed and flat out worst characters on the show. I don't absolutely hate them but I'm so over them.

Ruby's look is so awesome.

There's Emerald McNabb beside the twins' Assistant.

Augh, she has meander on her shoes!

I'M STILL LIVID THESE WERE NOT DOLLS.

Poppy's look is lovely but predictable. Not one of my faves, though Stella with the butterfly on her nose is the cutest.

Sunny's dress umbrella is a cute idea and it's very her, but not a fave of mine, but HER HAIR. Her baby hairs and the braiding and then the rhinestones around the part are gorgeous.

Jade has...no surprise...my favorite look. It's utterly impossible but so were Poppy's butterflies. it's amazing though. When will they do a Jade with dark makeup? UGH.

Skyler's hair eclipses her dress. She's so pretty. And Colin looks rightfully regretful. Her dress is pretty simple though and she had no reveal.

Violet's is pretty but also simple.

Amaya was a nice ending look. She's my third fave after Jade and Ruby.

Jett Dawson cameo.

Ms. Wright is pleased. Everyone passes. Ms. Morton has a surprise for them.

It's Bella. She's back. Don't expect it to be explained any time soon.

Vi Life 16

Violet ponders the questions we all had about how Bella got back and where she's going to live. Then she does a brief flashback to some earlier moments.

And that wraps up Season 1! This was fun, so I'll be tackling Season 2 soon.
