VINTAGE REVIEW: 1985 Tropical Barbie

In the 80s, Barbie often had multiple versions of herself in different races/ethnicities in each line. Her friends were used for bigger lines, but frequently, you'd have blonde Barbie, black Barbie and Hispanic Barbie. All wearing the same outfit. Think how they do the holiday dolls today. Same idea, only it happened more often.

An often used mold for the Hispanic and black dolls was called the Spanish mold (after its debut on the DotW Spain doll in 1982) or the Hispanic mold.

I only had Rockers DeeDee and DotW Spain for ages, but a year or so ago, I started picking up a vintage Barbie here and there. I rediscovered my love for this mold. I think it comes in second only to Steffie. I've had Island Fun Teresa and Cool Times Teresa for months now, but I only just got this Tropical Barbie today.

Look at that box! You'd never know it was 40 years old.

She's in absolutely pristine condition, aside from the rubber bands in her hair. I removed and replaced them.

Stunning. I love her. I think she's one of the prettiest with this mold.

One of the reasons I'm getting some new vintage dolls is that I'm rebuying outfits I had in childhood that I used to play with a lot. I still have many of them, but they're definitely in played with condition and I want new ones.

I bought this purple dress years ago at a doll show in Memphis and it's been waiting for someone to wear it.

I prefer her hair behind her, but it is in lovely shape.

Here are three of my girls.

I definitely need more. I want Sunsational and Sun Gold Malibu in the Hispanic versions. I also love Sunsational Christie, who used this mold as well as the Steffie mold. Both versions are gorgeous. Others on my list are black Tropical Barbie, Hispanic Dream Glow, California Dream Teresa, and DotW Mexico.
