OVERVIEW: Galoob Sashays

I have somehow never written a post for these little ladies. 

I can't remember when I discovered Sashays, but I'm almost certain it was thanks to Ghost of the Doll. 

These were produced by Galoob in 1986. Right around my proper time frame, so I have no idea how I never saw them in stores. Pretty sure young me would have wanted one. 

They're small dolls with painted-on bodysuits, shoes, earrings, and sometimes other jewelry, depending on the series. Each comes with a hat on a barrette and a large skirt that turns into a pillow. They also have a stand and a brush, both of which always seem to be pink. 

They're supposed to be scented, but none of mine have ever had any smell. 

The only info on the four series is on the back of the box. 

We have Sparkle, Shimmer, Garden and Glow.

The boxes on these girls are quite oversized and on the awkward side. It took me ages to figure out how to display the new one I just got. 

We'll start with the Glow series, as that's what Night Flower here is. 

This set has dolls wearing pink, peach, green, blue, and two different purples. 

The skirts are iridescent. 

The only way you know the doll's name is if you see her in box.

So the only other Glow we have a name for is the orange one: Sunset Orange. 

Then we've got the all-purple skirt. 

And the white one with lighter purple edges.

Moving on to the Garden series, these have prints on their skirts. 

They come in pink, peach, yellow, green, blue and purple. 

This is my second Sashay ever. Her name is White Spice, which I just learned because I now know someone with her boxed. 

Mine is missing her hat and stand. (And brush, but I don't care about that.)

I bought the purple one off etsy and she arrived yesterday. 

Here's the pink Garden girl! She was actually my first one ages ago, but I traded her for a Castle Keeps Gargoyle. Zero regrets on that, but it is good to have her back. 

I've had 3 loose dolls for years and I couldn't resist putting this one in the peach Garden outfit, which I also got off etsy. 

The doll is from the Sparkle line, which I knew, but I've just learned her name is Golden Forest.  

 

Since we had Golden Forest right there, let's show her off in the box. 

This is the Sparkle series, which are metallic. 

They come in pink, purple, silver, gold, copper, and another light one that I can't get a definite color for. It's silvery but also kinda purple? Maybe lavender metallic?

I'm proud to say she's mine. She just arrived today. 

Then finally, we have the Shimmer series, which has satiny skirts. 

These come in white, light pink, darker pink, yellow, blue, and purple.

I actually have her without any accessories. 

I also have this blue one that's a complete mystery, because she has the outfit style of the Sparkle series, but there's no blue. Maybe that odd-colored light one got turned into a blue one? 

Merry Cherry is the pink one.

COLLECTION UPDATE: Happy Ness and the Secret of the Loch

I have done it! Thanks to the very generous help of a reader here, I have finally finished my Happy Ness and the Secret of the Loch figure collection. (I have no interest in the Polly Pocket-esque lockets.) 

The figures come in 2 different sizes. The larger ones light up at the necklace gem.

Kind Ness large.

Lovely and Kind are slightly similar in that they're the only characters that use a similar color. The fastest way to tell them apart is to remember Lovely has a shell and Kind has a heart for a symbol. These symbols are at the ends of their tails and on their necklaces. Lovely also has more aqua hair while Kind's is bright blue.

This is one of my favorites from the entire set. There's something really cute about her, even though she actually has a rather odd-shaped face.

Cool Ness large. 

Cool Ness doesn't have rooted hair. She has a burst of gold tinsel instead. She's one of the two that comes with a mirror accessory instead of a brush.

Silly Ness large.

Silly is my overall favorite. She's the other along with Cool that comes with a mirror because she has a hat instead of hair.

Bright Ness large.

Bright Ness was by far the hardest character to find in both sizes. I got her last in the large size. 

And I just got her last in the small size, too! I'm so thrilled to finally have her! I bought the large Bright Ness in early December 2014. It's taken an additional seven and a half years to get my hands on the small version.

I also have two of the three plush versions. 

This is an old photo of my Happy Ness plush. This one is somewhat easy to find compared to the other two. The hard part is finding someone not asking an arm and a leg for her. 

I took a couple new photos of my Silly Ness plush today. She was easy to get out of the plushie net I have them both in, while Happy was in there a bit more, so I left her and used the old pic instead.

Very happy to take new photos of these and enjoy my full set of figures. I would love to get Cool Ness's plush someday but I couldn't afford the one up on ebay most recently. Happy Ness is another line to fall victim to a rise in popularity combined with collectors who overpay and raise prices for everyone.

OVERVIEW: Happy Ness and the Secret of the Loch

In 1995, Galoob produced a very unusual line of toys called Happy Ness and the Secret of the Loch. Yep, they're all Nessies! For a small line based on a cartoon, there were a lot of different types of toys. The main line was 6" figures that had light-up necklaces and headdresses. There were smaller 3" minis of the same six Nesses, plus three Polly Pocket-style locket playsets with tiny figures, and four human characters. And finally, there were three plush toys made.

Happy Ness

Happy Ness is not the easiest line to collect. ebay searches mostly bring you listings for the videos. I've managed to get all six light-up figures and five of the six smaller figures, plus one plush. (I'm not after the human figures or the mini playsets.)

Silly Ness

My first toy was the mini figure of Silly Ness, who's my favorite with her jester hat. Someone on ebay had several of the figures up in March 2011 and she was the only one I managed to win! I've bought almost all of my figures mint on card, and Silly had some paint deterioration on her bells, so I touched that up with gold paint. (I later did the same for my large Silly Ness.)

My next Ness didn't come until August 2011, when I randomly found the mini Happy Ness on Bonanza for $5. Happy is my least fave of the six, but she's still plenty cute.

Kind Ness

Kind Ness was the next to be added in May 2012, again in the mini size. I love both sizes, but I think the faces on the minis are extra cute.

Mini Cool Ness followed in August 2012, alongside my first big Ness, Lovely. I got both from the same seller.

Cool Ness

The bigger figures tend to have more flaws than the small ones. A lot of mine have dried-on glue dripping from where their arms were attached and the bodies are very obviously a different color than the arms. But they've all worked if I put a fresh battery in! I don't leave batteries in them though.

Each Ness comes with either a mirror or a brush. Cool Ness and Silly Ness have the mirrors, since they don't have brushable hair.

I got the large version of Happy Ness in February 2013, not too long before we moved.

I've been quite productive in my Ness gathering since we moved down here to Florida. The large versions of Kind Ness and Silly Ness came during Christmas 2013. My mom bought me Silly and I got myself Kind, but saved her to open with Silly on Christmas day.

The elusive Bright Ness

March 2014 brought me the small version of Lovely Ness and the large Cool Ness came in June, leaving me with only both the large and small versions of Bright Ness to find, along with the plush. Bright Ness, for some reason, is the most seldom seen and the one that goes for the highest prices. I saw a mini of her once and it sold for over $100.

Plush Happy Ness

After years of looking, I finally got my first plush in July 2014! It was Happy Ness, of course. The other two in the line are Cool and Silly, who I love, so of course Happy is the one I got. She is actually seen somewhat frequently. I've seen her several times since I bought mine. The problem with searching for these plush is that so few people know what they are. And do you know how many listings are on ebay for plush dragons and dinosaurs? I simply don't have the patience to dig through them all, which is why I still only have this one plush.

Bright Ness got added to the family in December 2014. And sadly, I haven't added another item since her, but I only need the harder to find stuff now. I hope to eventually get the mini Bright Ness and the two remaining plush, but it could take another few years. That's part of the fun and frustration of liking lesser known lines like this.

Happy Ness are a great and unusual line, but definitely not for the impatient! If you're going to start collecting, be prepared for it to take years.
