WINX CLUB Episode 4 "A Trick by the Trix"

Darcy is chilling in the Trix lair, painting her nails while listening to music (that's amusingly bothering Griffin). Icy freezes the skull-shaped speaker when she and Stormy enter. Darcy asks why Icy did that and Icy asks why Darcy is wasting time painting her nails and fantasizing about boys. Stormy says she has it bad. She wishes it was Sky just to annoy Bloom. Darcy says nope, the guy she likes is a secret, but she'll give them a hint: he's a bad boy. Ah, so Darcy genuinely likes Riven more this time. Interesting. Icy says that's a bad secret and they cut over to a nice photo collage of Riven. Ha! Stormy uses wind to blow the pictures away and Darcy calls "Goodbye, my beautiful scoundrel!" Also ha. She's not my Darcy but I can't say I don't like her. Vexius makes an entry and asks why they haven't brought him Bloom's power yet. Icy asks why they have to take orders from him and he binds the trio, making them admit that he's the boss. Turns out Vexius used to serve King Oritel as his "right hand" and he learned to manipulate the darkness because he spent so long in Oritel's shadow. He has a staff that opens the Omega Dimension, which he's going to trade the Trix for Bloom's power. He teleports Damien in, saying he's Vexius's spy in Alfea. Vexius leaves and Icy asks what Damien can do. He starts to mention something about his powers, but Stormy declares him a weakling. Icy says they work alone and to stay out of their way. Damien leaves. Icy reveals her villain plan: open the Omega Dimension and gather an army to help them rule the magical world.

The transformed Winx are flying around. Apparently, there's going to be a magical fitness exam and they're having a workout. So there's a whole musical number with them flying and then Bloom gets everyone to wish on dandelions. Stella says Bloom wished for a date with Sky, but Bloom says she wished she'd do well on the exam. Stella says she wished her wings didn't hurt. More flying and then the girls spot Damien practicing his magic. They land and Flora says they should talk to him. Bloom says she can do it, because if anyone understands magic not being easy, it's her. The others go inside the barn with Stella casting a quick look between Bloom and Damien. They pretty quickly bond over their struggles. The Trix are nearby and decide to use Damien as bait. Also, apparently months have passed, even though I swear Bloom just said earlier that she'd only been flying a few days? The timeline is screwy.

The Winx enter class and Bloom asks Sky is she can sit by him, but he apologizes and says he's saving it. Diaspro bounces in and is immediately goofy. How in the world did these two end up together? I hope he says it's some arranged thing later on. Musa comes in and asks what's up.

TECNA: Sky's proximity to his girlfriend Diaspro is causing Bloom distress.

I love you, Tecna.

Flora tells her to be quieter and she repeats herself more quietly. Gah, love her even more. She's hilarious.

FG enters and I guess this is History of Magix. They're going to discuss the battle between the Company of Light and the powers of darkness AKA: the Ancestral Witches. Stormy comments that the witches should have won. Sixteen years ago, CT was destroyed in this battle. Oritel was the leader of the Company and was capable of going to all dimensions, including Omega. Bloom asks if they can go there and FG says no, the Omega Dimension is a mystery to all of them. Stormy and Icy smirk. I think Stormy has the best face of everyone on this show. She's so cute! Robin and Griselda walk in and FG reminds everyone there will be no class tomorrow due to the fitness exam. Griselda says Robin and the Specialists will be overseeing everything. Sky's team is assigned to their class.

Outside, the boys are helping the Winx train. Brandon is concerned about playing favorites, which Sky clearly is because he knows Bloom is behind in spells and he wants to help. But he also says Griselda okayed this. Timmy says as long as they don't give away the surprise at the end and of course, Stella hears this. She asks what surprise and Riven says the one they literally just said they can't talk about. Sky goes for the distraction and has Timmy makes things more challenging. I can't even describe what they're doing. Sort of running around carrying a ball dodging magical ovals. I dunno. Bloom gets knocked over and Sky catches her, which annoys Diaspro, who then notices Damien spying. Diaspro calls him a weirdo and stomps off. Now the girls are trying to put three giant puzzle pieces together magically and Bloom fails in an amusing manner. She spots Damien and invites him to practice with them, but he declines, saying that morning was a mistake. He's a warlock, she's a fairy, so they'll never be friends. Damien runs around the corner and the Trix are there, saying he can help them after all.

Later, Bloom is on the balcony and of course, no one can leave her alone, so they all come out there. Bloom is disappointed because she felt like she had a moment with Damien but now it's gone. Aisha suggests they get some sleep because they're going to "rock that test to Andros and back."

The next morning, Griselda announces that the test is an obstacle course made up of three separate tests and one final surprise. They do the puzzle thing first and Flora blatantly helps Bloom but no one notices, I guess? The next test is the thing with the ball.

Oh, I just got really excited because they show Darcy in clear profile and she still has her nose!

Aisha says the girls need to transform and Bloom is all excited about their first group transformation. She asks "May I?" and Stella says of course, so they do the hand pose and then transform.

The test is them flying around with the balls dodging the ovals and trying to avoid the Trix's interference, though that's just some physical stuff, nothing magical. The ones that make it are the Winx, the Trix and Diaspro.

The final test divides them into random pairs and each pair has color-coded clues that lead them to a hidden trophy. Now the pairs do not seem random: Bloom/Flora, Tecna/Stella, Aisha/Musa, Icy/Stormy, Darcy/Diaspro. Why didn't they mix them more?

Flora and Bloom follow some yellow butterflies but really have no idea what to do. They spot Aisha and Musa with their trophy already, but the trophy turns into a robo monster thing that they have to chase. Flora suggests they hit the little balls the butterflies turned into at the same time.

Elsewhere, Icy and Stormy meet Damien in a deserted courtyard. Icy apologizes to him and says Vexius was right, there is a place for him in their plan. Damien is surprised, as he can't control his magic yet. Stormy asks Icy if she's sure this will work and Icy says Bloom will have no idea what's coming. Icy blasts Damien and the witches high five.

Bloom and Flora pull it off after a brief struggle and the little yellow balls turn into a map. The girls follow the map to the courtyard and the scary red magic sphere displays Damien inside. The sphere turns into the robo monster and jumps off with him inside. Bloom spots Icy and Stormy with their actual trophy and says they need to save Damien first.

Sky says he doesn't see Bloom and Flora. Griselda says they'd better return before time runs out or she'll fail them. Darcy is conspicuously absent, but everyone else is there.

Bloom and Flora try individual spells, but then Bloom realizes they need to hit it at the same time again. It works but now Damien is falling. Bloom guides him down while Griffin and FG watch from a window. Damien wakes up and asks what they did. Flora says Bloom saved him, but he says he doesn't need to be saved and runs off. The other Winx arrive, then Sky and Griselda. Bloom explains what happened but Griselda says anything is allowed, so they fail because they don't have the trophy. However, here come FG and Griffin! FG says the girls passed a test of character.

FG: Bloom and Flora put the rescue of their classmate first, and that is worth more than a thousand trophies.

Yeah, suck it, Griselda.

GRISELDA: But the rules!

GRIFFIN: Unfortunately, as you've figured out by now, getting these girls to think about rules is a lost cause.

Ha. Nice.

Musa complains that the Trix got away scot free again and Bloom says they'll get theirs.

The girls fly off and see Vexius yelling at Damien.

The next day, Flora and Bloom visit him in the barn. He couldn't even finish the test so he's upset. Flora asks about the creepy guy they saw him with. He says that's no one and to leave him alone because he can't be friends with fairies. The Winx go off to history class with Stella hoping there's no quiz.

Vexius appears again, bitching that Damien was just a pawn in the Trix's scheme. He tells him they need to be more aggressive and Damien says "Yes, Father."

END

Well, that was another good one.

I find it interesting that Damien, who's a brand new character, is getting way more focus than any of the boys. I'd like to see more from everyone except Sky. Also interesting that Brandon was the one concerned with rules.

Faves ranking: Tecna, Stormy/Darcy, Flora, Stella, Bloom, Aisha/Musa, Icy.

No changes except Flora jumped ahead of Stella. I feel like this show will have Flora being Bloom's closest friend. Stella's more the comic relief.

I like Darcy's development in having a character that isn't just an evil witch. She has other feelings, which she didn't really before. I do wish they'd stop having her bend to Icy so easily though. She's presented here as the weakest of the Trix with Stormy stepping up to pair with Icy more often. Icy's always been the weakest to me. Her power is just ice. Stormy is the most destructive, but Darcy's mind magic along with her darkness powers make her equally dangerous. I hope they show her doing stuff more often.
