WINX CLUB Episode 3 "Winx vs. Trix"

The monster from episode 1 is in Stella's room, finds her ring and exits through the window. The girls return home and Stella says now that Bloom is a fairy, it's time to take it up a notch. Aisha adds "with your very first transformation." Bloom is nervous about that, since she still can't control her magic. Stella suggests they use her ring, which can amplify power. Tecna says that sounds improbable and Musa says it won't work. Flora thinks it's worth a try, so Stella runs up to her room and lets out a scream. She says the ring is a family heirloom and her parents fight enough, so there's no telling what they'll do after this.

Elsewhere but not in their lair, the Trix have the ring. Icy says the amplification should help them steal Bloom's power. Darcy wants to put it on, but quickly backs down. Original Darcy was definitely better. They've weakened her. Her higher voice combined with bowing down to Icy too much isn't good. Stormy seems more on par with the other two, which is nice, but I don't like them weakening Darcy. But it turns out to be good, because the ring burns Icy. Stormy grumbles about magical protection, saying it must only work for Stella, and Icy calls her "queen of the obvious." Hey, someone's gotta make it clear for the kiddies. The Trix leave and the monster puts the ring on this amusing hand that looks like one of those vintage ring holders but witchier.

In Stella's room, they're looking for clues. Musa says the Trix took it, as they're "so good at being bad." Bloom says they're not that good and indicates a spot on the floor that Tecna analyzes. It's clear the culprit is a large creature. Flora notices the prints have ashes in them and Tecna does another analysis. She says those are Cloud Tower ashes and since the Trix are the only ones still going there, it must be them. Musa says it's too bad CT is off limits and Flora points out that they're already on thin ice with her. Aisha says "unless we get in and out quickly." Go, Aisha. That's more like your original self. Stella wishes for a map of the dungeons and then the bell rings.

Bloom separates from the others to hit the library. Ah, already skipping class. Sure you're not a witch, Bloom? I love when characters in shows or movies just flip to the middle of a book right away, like that's going to help. Yet it always works. Bloom takes a picture of the map she finds, then hears a voice calling her. Daphne? Maybe. Bloom calls out, asking who and where the voice is. A book magically drops from the shelves: The History of Domino. Once again, Bloom flips to the middle and then a woman appears, saying this section of the library, which by the way is not blocked off or anything whatsoever, is off limits. It's Griselda! She says she's the vice principal, then adds that there were numerous worthy candidates who would have followed the rules and been able to transform. That's not only bitchy, it's unfair, as they found Bloom. It's not like she applied. Bloom runs off, saying she's late for class, while Griselda hmms at the book.

We're with Wizgiz again. He has a doghouse that's chained shut and the challenge is to transform the chain into something else. Sounds like similar magic to turning the dog into a cat, yet I'm pretty sure these are not the same students in the class, aside from the Winx and Trix. Bloom gives it a shot but only turns the lock into a smiley face. Stella, with slightly different pronunciation, turns the chain into a necklace. Everyone claps, including the witches, who Icy glares at. Wizgiz praises Stella then tells her to put it back. She protests that it matches her shoes and he makes it disappear then return around the door handles back in chain form. Bloom shows the others her map of CT. Yeah, Bloom, talk about sneaking into the library in he middle of class, a class you share with the people you think stole the ring. Genius. Musa says Bloom may not have spells or transformation but she's got guts. Stella says they can go tonight. Wizgiz asks for another volunteer and Icy offers up Stormy, who protests but then turns the chain into a much cooler necklace that Wizgiz says is just his style. Heh. As class ends, Bloom pouts, saying she's the only one that can't do a basic transformation spell. Aisha points out she's also the only one who found a map that can help them.

Later, FG pops her head into the dorm room to say lights out. Does she do that with everyone? That's just kinda weird.

The girls creep through the CT ruins with Bloom leading the way, looking at a map on her watch. I feel like Tecna would have been more suited to this. Yep, I'm right, because Bloom's battery dies and Tecna produces this funky digital map.

TECNA: I've been told to say thank you after a compliment, so thank you.

Heh. I love her.

The Winx explore the Trix's CT lair. Aisha finds the ring and Stella puts it back on, saying she feels whole again. Maybe...don't take it off then? Flora asks if they can go now. Aisha says yes, because it's weird in there and she never gets scared. Stella hears someone crying though. The girls find a little creature in a cell and try to remember the chain spell from class. Seriously, no one remembers it? It's three words. Tecna calls up a recording of class and uses the spell on the chain. Man, Tecna is killing it here. A creature runs out, which looks like a baby version of the big guy that stole the ring...because he is. He turns back to his larger size and summons a bunch of little gremlin things. The Winx flee and then Stella uses her scepter to knock some of the ceiling down, blocking the monsters' path.

TECNA: Genius. That was a compliment.

With a high five. Okay, she might have just passed Flora as favorite.

But of course things aren't easy. There are the Trix, asking what the Winx were doing in their room. Stella says the same thing the Trix had been doing in hers, getting her ring. The Winx, minus Bloom, transform and Icy shoots a bunch of ice at them like she always does. "Hope you brought a sweater." Ah, that's definitely a line that feels like it's from the original. Turns out she caged everyone but Bloom and they can't break out. The...power of the SUN...can't get through ice? Oh, yeah, right, because we have to make this Bloom's big transformation rescue scene.

FLORA: It's so cold.

STORMY: It's called ice. Cold is the first thing on its resume.

Heh.

Bloom emerges from behind the ice enclosure and tells Icy to let her friends out. Icy says Bloom is who they want anyway. Icy invites her to melt the ice with her flames, then says "In case you're wondering, this is what power looks like." She blasts the ice again, causing spikes to grow on the inside. Darcy uses her power to show Bloom what's going on inside, as the spikes get closer to the other Winx. Darcy blasts her, saying "Don't you know it's rude to talk during movies." That finally gets Bloom to transform.

Transformed Bloom blows a column of fire out to the sky. Darcy says not to forget they fly, too, and the Trix just...fly around Bloom faster and faster? Not at all sure why, because Bloom is just floating there, looking pissed. She blasts them away and melts the ice cage in one blow. The other Winx are like you saved us and you transformed, but Bloom says it feels amazing but they should go before the Trix wake up.

At Alfea, Griselda is waiting for them.

BLOOM: In our defense, we're on our way in?

Ha! Nice.

Griselda says FG wants them in her office. Stella explains what happened and FG asks why they didn't just come to her. Yeah, that's a good question. Musa says Bloom transformed and Tecna adds "For the first time." FG says it seems to them that rules are made to be broken, but given the circumstances, they're dismissed for now. She sends everyone away except Bloom, asking how it felt to transform. Bloom says it was the best feeling of her life, being swept up in flames but not scared. FG says "Interesting" and tells her to keep focusing on her studies.

Back in the dorm room, the girls throw Bloom a surprise party for transforming for the first time. She says they should form a club. Stella asks what they should call themselves and Flora suggests Fairies Forever. Bloom says since they're the Trix, the girls should be the Winx. (With no explanation.)

TECNA: That is better than mine. Six Fairies Who Randomly Met at Alfea and Share a Common Room.

Is that the best thing any version of Tecna has ever said? It might be.

Bloom draws their logo and Aisha asks what Winx means. Bloom replies "Everything. Just...Winx." And she does the transformation hand gesture and winks. Now Aisha's in. Everyone's in. Group high five.

And then Musa starts..playing guitar. After midnight? Someone write fanfic about the girls' next door neighbors having to endure all this.

Oh, and now Musa has ordered pizza. Everything is great and the girls are happy.

Elsewhere, FG and Griffin are having a tea party. FG says Bloom transformed. Griffin says "Finally." FG adds that Bloom's power was so strong that she destroyed one of CT's underground tunnels. Griffin asks if it could be the dragonflame. FG says they can only hope. Griselda enters and shows them the book she found Bloom reading. They realize Domino is connected to the dragonflame and Bloom could potentially be a dangerous weapon for dark forces. Griffin says this is why she and FG joined up. FG says they'll keep an eye on Bloom together but for now, she can have some fun.

Back at CT, a man appears and says the Trix let Bloom outsmart them again. He demands her power in exchange for what they want and disappears. Darcy says he's going to doublecross them and Icy says not if they doublecross him first.

END

Ah, this was the best one yet! Plenty of screentime for the others, though not a ton of characterization for Aisha or Musa yet.

The Winx are up to their usual reckless plots, but at least it's all of them this time.

I like FG, Griffin and Griselda all working together.

I think I'm going to start ranking my faves every episode.

Tecna, Stormy/Darcy, Flora/Stella, Bloom, Aisha/Musa, Icy.

Tecna blew by everyone this episode. She was so great. Stormy eclipsed Darcy a little, mostly because of that weak Darcy moment, but Darcy had some fun stuff during the battle that caught her up, so they're tied. Stella is so amusing that she caught up to Flora and they're tied. Bloom redeemed herself quite a lot and scooted ahead of Aisha and Musa, though that could mostly be due to lack of characterization for those two. Musa has great potential. I like her better than original Musa already. And Aisha had some good lines and moments. There's a possibility Icy will remain on the bottom. This version of Icy is okay. She was always my least fave Trix, but there's something about this one that I don't care for as much.
